June Depot Display
to Feature Painted China

The C&NW Historic Railroad Depot in Redfield is pleased to announce the painted china and porcelain of Father Christopher Hughes, St. Bernard’s Church in Redfield, will be the featured display during the month of June.

A native of Huron, Father Christopher Hughes who knew he had a vocation in the priesthood in second grade, enjoys the pace in Redfield and says with a smile, “There’s always something to do.” In quiet moments during his very active schedule Father Christopher likes to do things around the church and grounds such as weeding, reupholster furniture, painting, writing poetry, spending quiet time with his companion - a miniature long haired dachshund name Caecilia, and his passion, painting china.

spacerThis Depot, originally dedicated on October 23, 1914, was built in the likeness of the original C&NW Depot in Chicago, IL. Passenger trains serviced this depot until early 1950's. The railroad then used the building for dry storage. Spink County Dairy and Northwestern Public Service were the next businesses to use the building for storage. Then in the early 70's Dakota Best Farm store moved in and occupied the building until 2001.

spacerIn 2002, the city of Redfield received a matching Federal Grant and began restoring the Depot to its original grandeur. Today, thanks to so many area families, everyone can enjoy the railroad items, model trains, engines and artifacts depicting the early days of the railroad.

Father Christopher Hughes
“When I moved to Redfield most of my possessions consisted of porcelain and china dish sets I have painted, and my books. His philosophy? “If you can’t find the Lord among the pots and the pans, the grass and the weeds, and the paintbrushes, you can’t find him anywhere.”

Currently the staff is working on a restoring the original kitchen. One of the first steps is to raise funds to reconstruct the Hoosier cupboard that was located on the long wall beside the café doors. This cupboard would have been used to store all the cooking products needed for the daily operation of the café as well as providing working space for making pies, cakes, and other delicious homemade treats. Pictures of the original cupboard are being sought. Anyone having information is urged to contact the depot curator, Kathy Maddox at 460-0144.
