Historic 1914 Chicago North Western Depot
Located at the intersection of US Highways 212 & 281
C&NW Depot As was any town in the 1900’s, the Depot was the hub of the community; people coming & going, picking up & dropping off items to ship, sending & receiving telegrams. The beautiful Romanesque C&NW Depot was built in 1914 at the cost of $38,000. Considered a luxurious building with the interior finished in golden oak, marble floors, and hardware of brass, it was the first public building in the city to be equipped with a semi-indirect lighting system. The Depot was composed of a ladies C&NW Depot waiting room with a matron on duty, a men’s waiting room, baggage room, express room, and an impressive restaurant. This passenger depot was only part of the Railroad network that made Redfield one of the busiest subdivision stations in the Dakotas. Rail lines went east and west and north and south from Redfield. In 2002 the City of Redfield received a matching Federal Grant and began restoring the Depot to its original grandeur just in time for the City’s 125th anniversary July 1-4, 2005. Northwestern Depot Now Open

South Dakota’s Oldest Continuous
Carnegie Library

5 East 5th Avenue
Redfield Carnegie Library

The Redfield Carnegie Library began as a reading club with members buying books to circulate. In 1900 the city applied to the Andrew Carnegie Foundation for a $10,000 endowment, which was awarded in March 1902. Carnegie's money enabled the community to erect a majestic red brick building, with tan sandstone foundation, lintels and sills. The architect crowned his design with a domed cupola. The interior has beautiful oak columns and woodwork. Redfield city offices were contained within the library in the early years, the City Auditor serving as Librarian

Still providing library service, the Redfield Carnegie Library has the distinction of being the oldest Carnegie Library in continuous use as a library in South Dakota. One can view the beautiful building during the regular Library hours Mondays through Saturdays.
